The Vail Project

Please allow me to share with you a large project of which I am most proud. It is a large series of North American animal paintings which has taken several years to complete. This project demonstrates my ability to paint landscapes and work in a large format. Be sure to check out the dimensions of each of these paintings; many of them are quite large. Working on a huge painting presented some unique challenges. With only one exception we built each of these panels by laminating layers of watercolor paper over Masonite panels. We then constructed rigid frames to prevent them from bowing and warping. The panels were so large they required me to use two easels and sometimes paint standing on a ladder .

Title: A Gathering of Chickadees
Medium: Watercolor on Board
Size: 20” x 20”
Price: $3000 SOLD

Title: Chipmunks in the Flowers
Medium: Watercolor on Board
Size: 20” x 20”
Price: $3000 SOLD

Title: Robins in the Nest
Medium: Watercolor on Board
Size: 20” x 20”
Price: $3000 SOLD

Title: Gray Squirrel in Spring
Medium: Watercolor on Board
Size: 20” x 20”
Price: $3000 SOLD

The four paintings described above were of normal size but required me to paint the landscape surrounding these fine little creatures, and get me warmed up for the large paintings.

Title: Deer at Water's Edge
Medium: Acrylic on Linen
Size: 66” x 66”
Price: $15,000 SOLD
This huge canvas is five and half feet tall and five at half feet wide, since I'm only 5 foot one, it presented some unique challenges. First of all, it needed two easels to support it, but easels can only go so low so I needed to paint lots of it standing on a ladder.

Title: Wood Ducks First Flight
Medium: Watercolor on Board
Size: 66” x 30”
Price: $12,000 SOLD
This painting gave me an opportunity to work on a scene that I've dreamed of painting for a long time.

Title: Raccoons in an Aspen Grove.
Medium: Watercolor on Board
Size: 30” x 105”
Price: $15,000 SOLD
The Aspen grove pictured here, is one I visited the preceding Fall, and frequently since. Fall.

Title: Bears by the Water
Medium: Watercolor on Board
Size: 36” x 78”
Price: 12,000 SOLD
This painting was a little smaller than the previous one, also required the use of two easels, but I finished it by mounting it on the wall. Dark animals present a unique challenge to every artist, since they reflect such a small amount of light.
